About

Physical organisation of the libdrone workshop in Telč. Covers IVAR shelf layout, container strategy (SAMLA and Rotho LONA), SKÅDIS tool organisation, drawer zone discipline, field bag contents, and implementation sequence. Organised by workflow phase, not by category.

libdrone — Workshop Physical Setup

Version: 1.4 | March 2026 Location: Telč, Czech Republic Status: In progress — new IVAR pending delivery Reference: LD_-_Shopping_list_v246.md (item numbers below refer to that document)

Overview

This document describes the physical organisation of the libdrone workshop. The workspace is compact — one desk, two SKÅDIS, and two IVAR shelf units — and must support the full libdrone development workflow: FreeCAD/CAD, 3D printing, electronics assembly, soldering, and field prep.

The guiding principle: the right tool or material in hand within seconds, not minutes. Everything is organised by workflow phase, not by category.

SAMLA container specs

Container L × W × H Volume Role in this workshop
SAMLA 5L 22 × 16 × 10 cm 5 L Small parts, hardware
SAMLA 11L 28 × 19 × 14 cm 11 L One half of the standard shelf pair
SAMLA 22L 39 × 28 × 17 cm 22 L Other half of the standard shelf pair
SAMLA 45L 57 × 39 × 28 cm 45 L Single-box phase shelves; sits deep into shelf
SAMLA 65L 57 × 39 × 42 cm 65 L Not used — too tall

Two container strategies — when to use which

Strategy A — 1× SAMLA 45L per shelf (used on shelves 2, 4, 5, and floor)

The 45L box is 57 cm long and 39 cm wide. Placed with the 39 cm dimension across the 50 cm shelf width, it extends 57 cm front-to-back — 15 cm beyond the 42 cm shelf depth, well within the accepted 56 cm overhang. One box only: two would require 78 cm width. Suits shelves with a single large phase (flight ops, build assembly).

Strategy B — 1× SAMLA 22L + 1× SAMLA 11L per shelf (optimal two-compartment layout)

Combination Width used Remaining
1× SAMLA 22L + 1× SAMLA 11L 47 cm ~3 cm

Placed side by side across the 50 cm shelf width (22L at 28 cm + 11L at 19 cm = 47 cm). Both fit within the 42 cm depth. 94% shelf width utilisation with only a 3 cm gap. Use when a shelf needs two distinct compartments — e.g. electronics + hardware sorting, or consumables + tools. Currently used on shelf 3 and top shelf.

Half-height alternative for the 45L footprint

IKEA does not make a half-height version of the 57×39 cm footprint. If a shallower box with the same plan area is needed:

SAMLA 45L Rotho LONA 29L
Length 57 cm 57.1 cm
Width 39 cm 39.2 cm
Height 28 cm 16.6 cm

The Rotho LONA line covers three heights on the same 57×39 cm footprint: - LONA 29L — 16.6 cm (half-height equivalent) - LONA 50L — 33.5 cm - LONA 70L — 45.5 cm

Available at: Heureka.cz, Bonami.cz, usporadejto.cz. Useful if a shelf needs to hold two stacked layers with a low-profile top box — for example, the filament floor shelf where a second tray of materials could sit on top of the bulk spools.

Main IVAR — Machine Tower (80×50×226 cm)

This unit is a machine tower. Its role is to house and support the two machines. Storage is minimal and machine-adjacent only.

Level Contents Notes
On top of unit Teas + generic electronics Dead storage — rarely accessed
Top shelf Brother MFP consumables (paper, toner, USB cable) Adjacent to machine
Second shelf Brother MFC-L2730DW laser printer Fixed — too wide for new IVAR
Third shelf Creality Space Pi Plus filament dryer (item 86) Feeds directly down into CoreOne
Custom slide-out drawer Prusa CoreOne Slide-out built by friend — full service access without lifting
Floor Wardrobe dryer Seasonal — fixed

Filament: Active spool in dryer on third shelf. Bulk SAMLA 45L at floor of new IVAR — knee height, 50 cm from printer. Pull one spool, load into dryer, done.

New IVAR — libdrone Storage (40×50×226 cm)

Organised bottom to top by build phase. Most-needed content at waist-to-eye height (shelves 3–5, roughly 80–140 cm). Rarely-needed items high or low. Item numbers reference LD_-_Shopping_list_v246.md.

Floor 1× SAMLA 45L + 3× ammo box Bulk + LiPo Bulk filament spools (heavy — stays here permanently). Separate zone: 3× LiPo ammo boxes (item 19b) — one per pack, physically separated from all other materials

Shelf 3 detail — workflow within the electronics shelf

The electronics shelf (third, ~80 cm) is the most-accessed during build sessions. The SAMLA 22L + 11L pair divides it into two lanes:

  • 22L (left, larger): active build components grouped by drone subsystem — FC/ESC stack together, video system together, GPS+RX together. Pick the subsystem you're wiring, lift its group out as one unit.
  • 11L (right, smaller): wiring spares, GX12-7 looms, and payload interface hardware. Kept separate so cable runs don't tangle with component bags.
  • 24-grid boxes (right of 11L or stacked on top): fasteners only — M2 by length, M3 by length, prop nuts. One category per grid. Label each cell with a label maker.

LiPo safety

Batteries at floor level in individual ammo boxes (one cell per box), physically separated from everything else. Charger HOTA D6 Pro (item 19c) positioned adjacent. Never store damaged or puffy cells here — remove from workshop immediately and follow safe discharge protocol outdoors.

⚠️ Do not store LiPo batteries in standard SAMLA plastic boxes. Use dedicated fireproof ammo boxes or a purpose-made LiPo safe. Each pack in its own box.

Main IVAR Drawer — Consumables Only (80×50×18 cm)

Previously overflowed because it held everything. Now holds consumables only, in three defined zones. All tools relocate to SKÅDIS. If it's not a consumable, it does not live here.

Zone Workflow Contents — specific items
A — 3D print support Print cleanup and maintenance Glue sticks (item 02), IPA, bed scraper, spare nozzle (item 01), nozzle brush (item 05), cleaning wires (item 06), silica gel (item 81), humidity cards (item 82)
B — Assembly consumables Soldering and mechanical build Kapton tape, 3M VHB (item 36c), foam tape, heatshrink (item 36d), zip ties (item 34), battery straps (item 34b), Plastik 70 (item 33), Super Lube (item 36b), epoxy (item 32), liquid tape (items 36e/36f)
C — Small electrics Electronics assembly and test Capacitors (items 30/30b/30c), TVS diodes (item 21b), buck converter (item 21), ShortSaver V2 backup (item 36), ESD strap spare (item 60), FTDI adapter backup (item 61)

Discipline: Zone A is opened during print sessions. Zone B during build and soldering sessions. Zone C during electronics sessions. If you're soldering and reach into Zone A, something has been put back in the wrong place.

SKÅDIS — Above Desk (Soldering Staging)

Staging surface, not permanent storage. Soldering kit lives here permanently. Everything else comes down for a session and goes back after. Setup time: ~2 minutes. Pack-down: ~2 minutes.

Workflow sequence at this station

  1. Pull active component bag from new IVAR shelf 3 → Nádoba on SKÅDIS.
  2. Unclip Omnifixo from its hook → onto desk.
  3. Begin soldering. Iron and fume extractor are already live.
  4. Done: return component bag to shelf 3, re-clip Omnifixo, wipe iron tip.

Permanently mounted: - Soldering iron SEQURE (item 55) on Hák L-shape - Fume extractor NEWACALOX (item 56) on Hák L-shape - Solder / AMTECH flux / wick (items 75/76/74) in Nádoba s víkem (lidded — prevents oxidation)

Comes down for session, goes back after: - Omnifixo (item 90b) — hangs on Hák L-shape when parked - Hot air gun FNIRSI (item 49) — stored on IVAR side SKÅDIS, brought to desk for rework - Active component bag (what you're building this week) — in Nádoba

SKÅDIS × 2 — Mounted on New IVAR Side Panels

Two SKÅDIS mounted on IVAR side panels. All tools that would otherwise occupy the desk or drawer live here — reachable from the standing position at the desk without moving feet.

Mounting hardware: - 2× Spojovací díl pro šatní skříň (104.776.43) — one per board, attaches to IVAR panel - 2× Spoj. díl na dírk. nástěnky (404.776.46) — joins the two boards if side-by-side geometry allows; omit if boards face different directions

Workflow grouping on these boards

Tools are grouped by the task that reaches for them, not by tool type:

  • Mechanical group (Dremel, stripper, prop balancer) — used together during print cleanup, prop prep, and crash repair
  • Grip group (pliers, tweezers) — used together during soldering and electronics assembly
  • Measurement group (calipers, square) — used together during CAD verification and post-print checking
  • Misc consumables (hex keys, bits, prop nuts) — used across all phases; binned by size

Implementation Order

Do this in sequence — each step enables the next and prevents doubling back:

  1. Assemble new IVAR. Mount SKÅDIS on side panels before pushing the unit against the wall — access to the side panels is impossible once it's in position. Install OBSERVATÖR cross brace immediately; do not leave a 226 cm unit unbraced.
  2. Move bulk filament SAMLA to new IVAR floor. Immediately frees the top shelf of the main IVAR and establishes the filament supply point 50 cm from the printer.
  3. Reorganise main IVAR drawer into three zones A/B/C. Remove all tools — they go to SKÅDIS. If it is not a consumable, it does not go back in the drawer.
  4. Mount desk SKÅDIS accessories. Soldering kit gets its permanent home — iron, fume extractor, and solder/flux/wick lidded together.
  5. Populate new IVAR shelves bottom to top, by phase. Label each box before filling — a label on an empty box is easier than a label on a full one.
  6. Pack three field bags. Fill from the Phase 3 shelf. Seal and label. Do not unpack between sessions — top up after each flight.
